WARNING: Teeny Weeny Deathly Hallows spoilers
So Having finished Deathly Hallows, it's rendered the next chapter of my Lucius/Narcissa fic pretty much useless (I do like to stick to the canon).
The next chapter was all to do with Regalus' Death; however now JKR has stated how it happens I cant really use the version that I literally spent months writing (and it's one of the favourite things I have ever written) so I figured that I would stick it on here then people can have a look!
So here it is
Lucius knew that Narcissa’s vigil over Regalus would do him no good. She watched him every hour of the day and night, she knew that the death-eaters would come for him eventually.
Eventually they did.
They were running through a field towards a dilapidated barn, to escape from the pouring rain, when the death eaters found them. As she knew that they would; she had hoped that eventually Lord Voldemort would forget her cousin’s crimes, that perhaps he would decide that Regalus wasn’t important enough to bother with. But nobody could betray Lord Voldemort and live. He had made that message clear. He did not forget and he could not forgive.
She was startled by the crack of apparition as several death eaters appeared about a hundred yards behind them. She reached into her robes, wand at the ready, but there was too many of them, and they were closing in on them fast. To fast for them to safely apparate away, they had no choice but to flee. Narcissa ran faster and faster, not noticing that they were being herded into the barn up ahead. She didn’t see the dark mark in the sky waiting for them. In desperation Narcissa ushered Regalus inside and shut the door, but it was no use, there was already waiting for them.
“You’ve avoided us longer than we ever thought possible Regalus. But your time is up.” She didn’t recognise the dry, rasping voice coming from behind the mask. The death eaters that had been chasing them now appeared, with a series of cracks. They were surrounded.
It was the last stand. And she was determined that she would take some of them out with her.
As she raised her wand Regalus spoke “There’s nothing more you can do Cissy” he turned to her gratefully, she was ready to put her life on the line for him, but he wasn’t prepared for her to do that. He took the wand out of her shaking hand and threw it on the floor alongside his own. “Thank you.” He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her cheek as tears rolled down her face.
He stepped forwards to meet his fate.
“Crucio” came the voice that had spoken before.
Narcissa watched as Regalus dropped to the floor, writhing in agony. Before she had chance to think about what she was doing she flung herself at the death eater who was torturing her cousin, knocking him aside, breaking the curse. He pushed her roughly into the arms of another masked figure; who dragged her back as she fought to get loose, kicking and screaming.
Regalus staggered to his feet. And Narcissa’s heart almost burst with pride as she watched him, a Black to his last breath. As his attacker raised his wand Narcissa turned and shoved her captor, but it was to no avail. He would not let her go.
“NO!!!” she screamed “No! Leave him alone” she tried as hard as she could to get free from her captor who held her all the more tightly, if she had been paying closer attention to him, she would have noticed a few wisps of blonde hair poking out from under his mask, but she was watching her cousin intently. She doubled her efforts to get free “No!” she begged them over and over again, eventually she stood still, helpless, tears screaming down her face as she waited for the killing curse to hit her cousin.
It wasn’t the killing curse that ended Regalus Black’s life, he didn’t have the luxury of a green flash sending him into oblivion. “Sectumsempra” the voice hissed. Regalus Black reeled as though struck. Narcissa finally broke free and ran to him as blood started to seep through his robes staining the dark fabric crimson.
As she reached him he began to falter. He rested his head against hers and she grabbed hold of his face “Cissy I’m sorry” he whispered as his legs gave way. She did her best to hold him upright, but he was too heavy for her small frame. She wrestled to stop him from falling, but he sank to his knees anyway, and from there he fell to the ground.
“Reggie hold on” she begged but it was too late.
She held onto him tightly, feeling the cold from her rain soaked clothes contrast to the warmth of his blood which was now ebbing onto her dress. The water from her hair and tears was dripping onto his face as he gasped for breath. She looked around for a wand but there wasn’t one, she had never felt this helpless, completely devoid of all power. There was nothing she could do.
As she watched the closest thing that she had ever had to a little brother die, the death eaters started to disapparate. Their job here was done. Only one masked figure, the one with the long blonde hair who had held Narcissa back remained. He slowly took off his mask and looked at the scene before him.
Narcissa was bent over Regalus’ body sobbing, tears streaming down her face, her dress covered in blood that the death eater prayed wasn’t hers. Her long blond hair was plastered to her forehead and her thin summer white dress was drenched from the pouring rain, and the blood from her cousin though she didn’t seem to have noticed. The rain drops hammering on the corrugated iron roof of the barn, providing the only noise, while the dark mark blazed overhead.
“Come away Narcissa” he croaked, “we have to go home”.
She turned and looked at her husband, noticing his presence for the first time. “How could you?” she asked him bitterly.
“You know I didn’t have a choice, Regalus brought this upon himself. He knew the penalty for betraying the Dark Lord.”
Narcissa hung her head, knowing that Lucius was right Regalus had known the consequences of his actions, but that hadn’t made it any easier for her to bear, or the fact that her husband had aided in his murder. She sat holding his hand, unable to let go.
“Narcissa we should go home.” She ignored him and he continued to cajole her “Darling there is nothing you could have done.” There was still no response, he went over to her, trying to lift her up, she was shaking, though whether it was from shock or the cold he didn’t know. “Goddamn it Narcissa get up!”
She pushed him away brutally and it tore his heart, her blue eyes were icy with hatred and she rounded on him “How could you just stand aside and let him die?” she demanded, but she didn’t want to hear his answer, because deep down she knew that Lucius had had no choice, that the Dark Lord could not be betrayed.
She looked up,
“You cold cruel bastard. How could you force me to watch him die? You son of a bitch, I wish I’d never laid eyes on you.” She threw her anger onto him and watched as he dispassionately accepted it. She felt angry and numb, and at this moment she didn’t know her husband.
She took off her wedding ring and threw it at his feet.
He watched her disapparate sadly before bending down to pick her ring up from where it laid in the dirt at his feet.
